Buile Buile Cheíle at the Roundy

Rónán Ó Snodaigh

Recently I went to a new weekly Sunday night gig at the Roundy called Buile Buile Cheíle with Donal. Basically, he needed someone to hold his camera bag while he did his thing taking pictures but heh, I’m not proud and it got me out of the house. The night itself features different artists each week so you might want to pick and choose, just check out CorkGigs for details of who’s playing.

The opening gig was nothing short of an eclectic cross-cultural mix of traditional Irish, African and Latin American styles and rhythms. While all of the artists on the night were excellent, I suppose the highlight was Rónán Ó Snodaigh from the band Kíla, who is undoubtedly completely bonkers and mad as a hatter but all of the better for it, I reckon. Donal will probably have some pictures of the night up on his own blog sometime later this year but given his current photographic backlog, I’m not holding my breath!

The weirdest thing happened when I was making this post. I was listening to Fabio & Grooverider’s drum and bass show on the BBC Radio 1 website when I opened Rónán Ó Snodaigh’s MySpace page. Unbeknownst to me, his song "Row away from the Rocks" started to play over the drum and bass music in the background. The odd thing is that I didn’t notice and thought that there was some kind of really funky reggae like drum and bass lyrical fusion thing going on... look, it was strange at the time.

The excellent Ger Wolfe is playing in there this Sunday. Would you mind coming along and holding my camera bag again while I feck off and take piles of pictures? I could have given you a few pictures if you asked kindly but yeah I have a bit of a backlog at the moment. I'm getting there though.

The gig itself was mad, the place was jammers though. As we discussed, a different location for the stage might help. And what's with all the chairs? If it's busy, get rid of them? Rant over.

You should try mix them two tracks together and see how it comes out.

Sounds like a good night even if you had to hold Donal's camera bag. :-)
